LMS Migration
Overview
Prior to Covid-19, F2F programs had no online presence or use of an LMS. When transitioning these programs to virtual, use of an LMS was necessary, and we developed these new courses in Canvas. In an effort to streamline development and standardize course functionality and usability, LMS course templates were developed, and these served as the base of what would become our fully online course templates.
Migrating Moodle Courses to Canvas
Similar to the project of developing our F2F virtual courses in Canvas, I mapped out the transition process:
Using our F2F virtual template as a base, develop a Canvas blueprint to reflect an online, asynchronous modality.
Collaborate with the LMS migration team to implement a mechanism to export Moodle course packages and import into Canvas to cut down on manual inputting.
Create isolated development shells for each online professional development course.
Updating Courses in Canvas
Using the HTML5 conversion schedule projections, map out the order to migrate courses.
Apply blueprint to all development shells, then migrate most recent course offering from Moodle to Canvas.
Audit all course activities such as quizzes, assignments, and workshops – manually update to work as originally intended.
Implement HTML5 multimedia in lieu of Flash content.
Document and Train
Document migration procedure, train IDs and Program Managers, and manage project timelines.
Curate training resources for students and instructors. Train instructors one-on-one.
With this process in place, we were able to migrate over half of our online professional development courses by Spring 2021, leaving us a considerable time buffer to complete migrations over the year as courses were offered.
